Simple searches are usually "key word" searches that search everything. For instance if you search for Shakespeare, you will find things written by Shakespeare, things with Shakespeare in the title, and things about Shakespeare.

Advanced searches use a controlled vocabulary and search designated fields - Author, Title, Subject, and ISBN. Advanced searches find much less than Simple Searches, but the results are more relevant.
